Anesthesia by Pathology

Renal or Urinary Disease

Diagnostic tests and surgical interventions can be delicate moments for our patients, especially when they find themselves outside their usual environment and without the company of family or loved ones. This situation can lead to increased nervousness, which complicates both the professionals' work and the patient's health status.

At IVeM, we understand this situation, which is why we have Quique Plaza, who is responsible for the anesthesia and analgesia service.

To ensure the well-being of our patients and tailor the procedure to each individual, the chosen anesthetic protocol is based on various factors, such as the patient's condition and the type of intervention required, as well as any pre-existing conditions. In this regard, conducting a pre-anesthetic consultation is essential to get to know each patient who will undergo anesthesia in detail.

At IVeM, we take pride in providing comprehensive care for our patients, and the pre-anesthetic consultation is a fundamental part of our approach. We are committed to delivering the highest quality of veterinary care, ensuring that every patient feels cared for, comfortable, and safe before, during, and after any medical or surgical procedure.

Renal alterations in veterinary patients are medical conditions that affect the health and function of the kidneys. These pathologies can include chronic kidney disease, acute renal failure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, among others.

When it comes to anesthetizing a patient with renal alterations, it’s important to take additional precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of the animal.

Before the anesthetic procedure, a thorough preoperative evaluation is necessary to determine the patient's overall health status and kidney function. This may include blood and urine tests, kidney function assessments, and other specific examinations based on the individual needs of the patient.

If significant renal alterations are detected, it may be necessary to postpone or avoid anesthesia if the risk is too high. The main goal is to ensure that the patient's kidneys are functioning as well as possible before anesthesia.

During anesthesia, careful monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, oxygenation, and temperature is essential. This is crucial for detecting any changes or complications and making adjustments to the anesthetic protocol if necessary.
