Anesthesia by Pathology

Digestive System Disease

Diagnostic tests and surgical interventions can be delicate moments for our patients, especially when they are outside their usual environment and without the company of family or loved ones. This situation can lead to heightened nervousness, complicating both the professionals' work and the patient's health status.

At IVeM, we understand this situation, which is why we have Quique Plaza, who is responsible for the anesthesia and analgesia service.

To ensure the well-being of our patients and tailor the procedure to each individual, the chosen anesthetic protocol is based on various factors, such as the patient's condition and the type of intervention required, as well as any pre-existing conditions. Therefore, conducting a pre-anesthetic consultation is essential to get to know each patient who will undergo anesthesia in detail.

At IVeM, we take pride in providing comprehensive care for our patients, and the pre-anesthetic consultation is a fundamental part of our approach. We are committed to delivering the highest quality of veterinary care, ensuring that every patient feels cared for, comfortable, and safe before, during, and after any medical or surgical procedure.

In the specific case of the digestive system, it's important to consider its physiological functions and anatomical adaptations to take appropriate measures during patient preparation.

The continuous supply of water, nutrients, and electrolytes is essential for the proper functioning of the body. The digestive system is responsible for digesting and absorbing food, allowing the acquisition of the necessary nutrients for cellular metabolism. Additionally, it maintains the balance of water and electrolytes, which are crucial for the proper functioning of various biological processes.

During the preoperative assessment, it is common to find alterations in blood volume (the volume of circulating blood) and acid-base balance (the equilibrium between acids and bases in the body). These alterations can result from underlying conditions, such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, or metabolic disorders.

From an anesthetic standpoint, it is vital to stabilize the patient before surgery. This involves correcting any abnormalities in blood volume, restoring adequate hydration, and addressing any existing electrolyte imbalances. It’s also important to evaluate and correct any acid-base imbalances, as an inappropriate pH can affect the function of various organs and systems.

In some cases, especially when the patient is malnourished, nutritional support may need to be provided through a feeding tube or parenterally (intravenously), depending on the individual needs of the patient.

In summary, the preoperative assessment of a patient with digestive system alterations should include a detailed evaluation of blood volume, electrolytes, and acid-base balance. Correcting these abnormalities, along with improving nutritional status if necessary, will help optimize the patient’s conditions before anesthesia and surgery. This not only promotes better recovery but also reduces the risks associated with the surgical procedure.
