Cavities are an uncommon disease in dogs that involve the demineralization and destruction of hard dental tissue. These lesions result from microbial activity on carbohydrates. Symptoms include pain, difficulty chewing, and small brown spots, although they often go unnoticed.
Diagnosis is performed through an oral cavity examination and dental X-rays to assess the depth of the lesion. Depending on its severity, treatment may involve simply removing the damaged surface of the tooth, applying sealants to prevent future cavities, or even performing root canal treatment or tooth extraction if the cavity affects the pulp chamber.
