Cat Day 2024: Fun Facts About Felines

Did you know that World Cat Day is celebrated on three different dates throughout the year? This day, dedicated to one of the world’s most beloved companion animals, is observed on February 20th, August 8th, and October 29th.

To celebrate, we’d like to share some fascinating facts about these incredible felines that you may not know:

-The oldest known domestic cat lived 9,500 years ago
In 2004, French archaeologists discovered the tomb of a 9,500-year-old cat in Cyprus, making it the oldest known domestic cat to date.

-Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping
Cats sleep between 16 and 18 hours a day. Even while asleep, they remain alert to any stimuli.

-Their peculiar way of walking
Cats walk by moving the right limbs first and then the left, advancing half their body at a time—just like camels and giraffes.

-A cat went to space in 1963
On October 18, 1963, Félicette, also known as Astrocat, became the first and only cat to travel to space.

-The oldest cat ever lived to be 38 years old
The longest-living cat on record was Creme Puff, who lived 38 years and 3 days. She was born on August 3, 1967, and lived until August 6, 2005.

-Siamese cats can change color
Siamese cats can change color based on their body temperature. They carry a gene for albinism that activates at around 36°C, turning their extremities blond or brown.

-Cats are musical creatures
Cats can make up to 100 different sounds, compared to only 10 in dogs. This makes them remarkably vocal animals.

-They communicate with each other through scent
While domestic cats use meows and other sounds to communicate with humans, they prefer scent signals among themselves. Pheromones play a crucial role, helping them mark territory, recognize each other, and express emotional states.

-Night vision
Cats have a special structure in their eyes called the tapetum lucidum, which reflects light that passes through the retina, allowing them to see better in low-light conditions. This gives them excellent night vision, perfect for hunting in the dark.

-Seismic sensitivity
Cats can perceive low-frequency vibrations caused by seismic activity. This may be due to their keen hearing and ability to detect even the slightest vibrations in the ground.
