Cataracts in Dogs: Symptoms and Treatment

There are numerous reasons why cataracts can appear in dogs: inadequate diets, eye inflammations, trauma... However, it is very possible that a dog will end up suffering from cataracts due to the genetics of its breed or as a problem derived from diabetes.

Cataracts in dogs are one of the most frequent causes of vision loss. They should be corrected as soon as possible so that our pet can continue with its daily life without limitations and does not lose sight permanently.

This condition causes a progressive clouding of the lens, which is the transparent structure located inside the eye that allows focusing clearly on objects at different distances.

One of the first signs that catches the attention of the dog's family is the opacity of the pupil, which, on many occasions, is associated with altered vision and causes difficulties when overcoming obstacles, climbing stairs, or finding toys.

The Causes of Cataracts
There are numerous reasons why cataracts can appear in dogs: inadequate diets, eye inflammations, trauma... However, it is very possible that a dog will end up suffering from cataracts due to the genetics of its breed or as a problem derived from diabetes.

A drastic drop in weight or drinking much more water than usual can be a warning sign of diabetes. Timely treatment before the lens becomes cloudy or our dog begins to move clumsily can prevent the formation of cataracts.

How are Cataracts in Dogs Cured?
Currently, just as in humans, there is no effective medical treatment for cataracts. The only solution is to undergo surgery as soon as possible to remove the opaque lens.

"The surgery consists of replacing the damaged lens with a new artificial one," explains Marcos Izquierdo, a veterinary ophthalmologist at IVEM. "Vision recovery is rapid, but the dog will need a rest period of a few weeks during which it will wear an Elizabethan collar to avoid touching its eyes, and it will be checked periodically at the clinic," adds the ophthalmologist.

Sofi, Our Latest Success Story
Sofi is a German Shepherd with some health problems, including diabetes, which has caused the development of cataracts. Her family noticed because her usual behavior gradually changed. "She began losing the characteristic color of her eyes, and little by little, she started bumping into everything and moving with difficulty," explains her caregiver.

"The vast majority of cataract surgeries are successful, and dogs recover their normal activities and behavior. We love to see how, after surgery, they return to playing and interacting with their caregivers as they did before the illness. They not only regain their sight but also their vitality," concludes Marcos Izquierdo.
