Cataract surgery is an ophthalmological procedure performed to correct the opacity of the eye's lens, known as a cataract. During this surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens.
The surgery is performed through a small incision of less than 3 mm, using a specialized machine called a phacoemulsifier, which fragments and aspirates the cataract. The technique and instruments used in veterinary medicine are exactly the same as those used in humans.
In cases of lens luxation, phacoemulsification cannot be routinely used to remove the lens from the eye, and we often have to employ a more aggressive technique known as intracapsular lens extraction.
Choosing the most appropriate surgical technique for each situation maximizes the chances of preserving vision in our patients.
