Tear Duct Surgery

Lacrimal surgery in veterinary medicine involves surgical procedures targeting the lacrimal system, which is responsible for producing and draining tears. This system is essential for keeping your pet's eyes lubricated and protected.

Here are some examples of lacrimal surgeries that may be performed:

  • Conjunctivobucostomy / Conjunctivorhinostomy: These surgeries are performed to treat obstructions in the nasolacrimal duct. They create a new drainage pathway for tears to flow either into the oral cavity (conjunctivobucostomy) or the nasal cavity (conjunctivorhinostomy).
  • Dacryocystectomy: In cases of chronic infections or tumors in the lacrimal sac, surgical removal of the sac may be necessary. This procedure helps alleviate persistent infections and prevents further complications.
  • Lateral Luxation or Prolapse of the Lacrimal Gland: Many dog breeds are genetically predisposed to the luxation of the accessory lacrimal gland, located at the base of the third eyelid. Surgical repositioning is often required to prevent chronic damage to the gland, which can lead to dry eye.

It's crucial to emphasize that lacrimal surgeries should only be performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist or a veterinarian specialized in surgery. Each case is unique, and surgical techniques will vary based on the individual needs of the animal and the specific condition of the lacrimal system.
