Orofacial Pain

Orofacial pain is a condition characterized by acute or intense oral and facial pain. It occurs more frequently in feline patients, although it can also affect dogs.

Symptoms to watch for include scratching at the face and mouth, as well as exaggerated licking and chewing movements. Pay close attention during feeding and grooming times. This pain, which can range from mild to severe, may be constant or only appear at specific moments, such as in response to environmental stress or during mealtime.

The causes of this pain in the oral area and around the face are varied. It’s crucial to identify and treat the underlying dental condition. The source of the pain is often some type of dental injury (such as dental resorption, fractures, infections), oral tumors, or facial trauma from a fall or impact. Other causes, like trigeminal neuropathy or dermatological diseases, should also be considered.
