Oral health in dogs and cats is essential to their overall well-being, and when neglected, it can lead to a range of health problems that go far beyond the mouth.
The oral health of dogs and cats has a direct impact on their quality of life. That’s why it’s crucial to take care of their teeth and gums—proper oral hygiene helps prevent serious illnesses. Even though many people don't consider their pets' mouths a key part of their overall health, poor oral hygiene can cause a wide array of both local and systemic issues.
Some of the most common oral problems include:
Gingival inflammation. Gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, damaging the tissues that support the teeth and leading to tooth loss. These conditions are common and painful, often causing behavioral changes and difficulty eating. As they advance, they may affect surrounding structures such as the eyes, nasal cavity, and jaw. If left untreated, they can even impact vital organs like the liver, kidneys, and heart.
Bad breath. Halitosis isn’t just unpleasant—it’s often the first sign of oral disease. Periodontal disease, oral masses, and abscesses can all initially present with bad breath.
Tooth fractures. Fractured teeth expose the inner parts of the tooth to oral bacteria, leading to pain, infection, and abscesses.
Missing teeth. Tooth loss may indicate periodontal disease, tumors, or unerupted teeth. In any case, it’s important to identify the cause to prevent further harm to your pet’s health.
How Can I Care for My Pet’s Oral Health?
Fortunately, maintaining your dog or cat’s oral health can be simple with a proper routine. Regular tooth brushing is key to keeping their mouths clean. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for dogs and cats. Ideally, you should brush their teeth daily.
There are also products available that help reduce plaque and tartar buildup, contributing to cleaner and healthier teeth. However, these products are not a substitute for daily brushing, but rather a helpful addition to an oral hygiene routine.
Don’t forget the importance of regular veterinary check-ups. These visits are vital to detect dental problems early and help prevent complications by identifying diseases in their early stages.
On World Oral Health Day, at IVeM we want to remind you to stay alert to signs of dental problems. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s time to consult your veterinarian:
